PARKING PROPOSAL
ALBERT PARK TUNNELS
The establishment of a car parking station under Albert Park was advocated by a deputation from the Automobile Association (Auckland) which waited upon the City Council last night. Mr. G. W. Hutchison, who headed the deputation, supplied details of the proposed scheme, stating that the station could be designed to accommodate 400 cars which, at a weekly charge of 10/6, would bring in a revenue of £10,930 per annum. The association felt that if the opportunity were not taken now it would be lost. The Mayor, Mr. Allum, said the decision to fill in the tunnels under Albert Park had been made to stop maintenance costs and not because there was any danger of the tunnels falling in. Nothing wuld be done by Ahe council to prejudice the scheme, and the association's submissions would be examined. The matter would have to be discussed with the Government and the various local bodies responsible for the cost of back-filling the existing tunnels. ' ■' «
