Drive Against American Air Base In China FIERCE COMBAT RAGING Rec. 2 p.m. CHUNGKING, Sept. 7. Large Japanese forces have reached within 12 miles of the big American air base of Lingling, says the Associated Press. A fierce combat is raging. Other Japanese forces have reached to within 25 miles of Tungan, which guards the western approaches to Lingling. The Chinese High Command estimates that the Japanese are throwing 250,000 men into the Hunan fighting. It admits the loss of Yungfen and reports that another Japanese force, striking due westward of Hengyang, has reached within 18 miles of the important Chinese base of Paoching.
