CONTEST RESULTS
| Some beautiful and original entries ! were sent in for the Name Contest. In t fact the standard of almost all those* who entered was extremely high. However, we were disappointed that there were not as many entries as there were for the last painting contest. When we announced that we hoped to give everyone who entered the contest an award, in order to build up your merit cards, we thought you would all have hastened to send in entries, even if you could not think of any original way of doing them. After all, you merely had to write or print your name neatly! We're afraid many of you are shy and uncertain of yourselves when you're not given anything definite to do. Nevertheless, it was delightful to see how varied were the entries sent in, and we wish we could publish some of the best for you. There were exquisite painted designs, ornamental printing and funny little people and faces made out of letters. Especially good, as always, was the work of the 12.14 year-olds. Here are the winners of the half-crown prizes, with brief descriptions of their entries: 15-17 years.—Brian Fisher and Gloria Towse. (Brian painted his name in a P°ster effect, using bold, bright colours, and Gloria made a design with elves and flowers). 12-14 years.—Dorothy Howard (beautifully painted design) and Diane Todd, who cleverly pictured every part of her address and age; for example, a camp and a bell and a road, for Campbell Road, a map of New Zealand and 13 pinhead figures for her age. _ V nc *. Gr 12 years.—Shirley Dixon and Robert Bruce Wardrop, both aged 9. Shirley had quaint pinhead figures climbing all over the letters of her name and address—a most original entry—and Robert s contribution was well-thought out, with a spider in the middle of a web. indicating his famous namesake! We are awarding a special prize of 2/ to Gary Barker, who is only six, and who drew an aeroplane with the letters ? name forming the windows. We ielt it was unfair to judge the very little ones with the ten-year-olds. The following boys and girls sent in highly commended entries and will each receive eight points or more: Nola Fulton Beverley Barnes, Gwenyth Birnie, Carol Church, Everard and Valerie Blackburn, « iif 1 ™ Joan Wardrop, Barry Stansfield, Nancy and Alison Barker, Joan ,firai ' et , Dll " can . Cynthia Russel, Glenys Winnard, Diane Leech, Elaine Huckstep Marian Thomson, June and Joy Allright, Louis Haig, Stanley and Mary Walker, Thomas Morgan, Heather HawValerie < Broadhu™t.' Anlh ° ny Lemmon > n addition, merit cards will be awarded to a number of contributors whose work was quite good but a little befow ?he standard of those mentioned above.
