SYRIAN'S APPEAL

An interesting geographical point was raised by Mr. Burt when appearing before the No. 1 Armed Forces Appeal Board yesterday a f ternoon on behalf of Joseph Bird, a Syrian, who sought exemption from military rervice on the ground of hardship. Mr. Bird quoted an Army instruction that Asiatics were not required to serve in the armed services. He had looked up the encyclopaedia and found that Syria was in Asia Minor. The appellant, therefore, was an Asiatic. It was also explained that the reservist's mother was a widow, 70 years of age, and was unable to read or write English. She had to have someone to look after her. The board adjourned the appeal sine die.
