Association— Lec. 2,30 p.m. SYDNEY. Julv 31. . troops have landed on islands at the western tip of Dutch New Guinea. Their main landing point was at Sansapor, on the important oil centre of Vogelkop loiana, near Sorong. The nearby islands of Amstercam and Middleberg nave also been invaded
General Mac Arthur's forward position rs in New Guinea have thus oeen advanced 200 miles from Noemfoor Island, the last American invasion point, to within about ,600 miles of the Philippines. Little opposition to the new drive has yet developed. The big Japanese base of Manokwari has been bypassed and a further 15,000 Japanese troops isolated with little hope of escape. The main air attack reported by General Mac Arthur's communique to-day was against Boela oil centre, on Ceram Island. Many fires and explosions were caused in the oil storage areas. Three vessels of 5000, 3000 and 1000 tons respectively, were damaged.
