TRAINING FOR THE SEA

CADET DIVISION INSPECTED

"I hope many of you will follow the sea as a profession," said Commodore W. K. D. Dowdmg, D.S.C., R.N., naval officer in charge at Auckland, after his inspection of the Auckland Division of the Navy League Sea Cadet Corps at St. Mary s Bay. There were about 130 on parade, including a guard of 16 of the older cadets. Commodore Dowding said that he was confident that the Royal NewZealand Navy could provide a career worthy of any boy in the country. He added that both the Navy and the Merchant Service provided excellent openings for boys. "A very smart turn-out," was the way in which Commodore Dowding described the parade. He complimented the cadets on their high attendance at parades and referred to the work of the cadet petty-offi-cers, leading seamen, officers and instructors.

Letters of commendation for v their services were presented by the commodore to five officers and instructors on behalf of the Navy League. They were:—Sea Cadet Lieutenant L. N. Foote, Lieutenant A. G. Carnachan, R.N.Z.N.V.R. (retired), Skipper R. B. Daverne, R.N.Z.N.V.R., Chief - Petty - Officer E. Hayter, R.N.Z.N., and Sea Cadet Chief-Petty-Officer Mills.

The commanding officer of the division, Commander C. H. T. Palmer, accompanied the commodore on his inspection. Representatives of the Navy League executive council and the corps committee were present.
