"Is it not just as important—it is more important—to employ our youths as seamen as it is for them to be porters and guards on the railways?" said Sir Ernest Davis, chairman of the Northern Steamship Co., Ltd., at the annual meeting of shareholders to-day. "Our vessels could well be used as training ships for national reservists, with the men manning these ships in the normal way as the nucleus of a reserve of naval trainees," he added. "In other words, our seamen serving in our ships should be potential members of the Naval Reserve, ready at call in the hour of the nation's need, to assist in the policing of the seas and the defence of our country."
