WINS SYDNEY SEAT MR. LANG'S ONLY SUPPORTER (0.c.) SYDNEY, June 26. Mrs. Lillian Fowler, Lang party member, who has defeated Mr. F. Burke, holder of the Newtown (Sydney) seat for 27 years, is known throughout the electorate as "Li 1." She will be Mr. Lang's only supporter in the new State Parliament. Mrs. Fowler was born at Ccoma. where her mother, aged 90, still lives, but since 1915 she has lived near Newtown Bridge. She is herself a grandmother, with a granddaughter aged 11. For 20 years she was a loval supporter of Mr. Burke, and kept the leagues "right," which ensured his selection in successive elections. She broke with- him when Mr. Burke transferred his allegiance from Mr. Lang to Mr. McKell. Since then she has refused to belong to the Official Labour party, although she has been a Labour supporter from the age of 16. Mrs. Fowler for years was a particularly prominent member of the Mayor's relief movement in Newtown during the depression. She has been a member of Newtown Council since 1929, and was Mayor in 193S and 1939—the first woman Mayor in the Commonwealth.
