DANGER OF FIRE
NIGHT CLUB'S REQUEST •
Proposals that fire extinguishers or other appliances, and, if necessary, the services of a fire watcher be approved as temporary measures, and that a license be granted to operate a dance hall as soon as possible, were made to the City Council last evening by solicitors for R. H. Kennedy, proprietor, of the Shortland Club, Shortland Street. It was stated that owing to shortage of labour and materials, alterations to the premises to comply with the city by-laws had not yet been effected. The city engineer, Mr. A. J. Dickson, reported that there was no provision in the by-laws permitting such an alternative, even as a temporary measure. The building was seriously deficient as to satisfactory means of egress, and the superintendent of fire brigades agreed that there was no safeguard against panic in the event of a fire. The application was declined.
The works committee was instructed to report regarding an application by H. and M. Levine for a license for the Silver Slipper Club, Fort Street, the applicants to be invited to appear before the committee.
