SURPLUS TRUCKS

SYSTEM OF DISPOSAL NEW SCHEME RECOMMENDED Modification of the present scheme for the disposal of surplus Army trucks was recommended at a meeting of the Council of the Auckland Chamber of Commerce yesterday. It . was suggested that people desiring trucks should write to the Licensing Authority and that a mixed panel system, comprising two business men not running trucks, and two officers of the Public Service should be set up to advise in connection with each application. The Commissioner of Supply advised that the matter of determining what trucks could be made available to the public was the responsibility of the Army. It was stated that when the Army advised the Ministry of Supply that certain vehicles had become surplus valuations were made by the Government Valuation Board. Details of specifications and prices were then circulated through the Motor Vehicle Retailers' Association. Vehicles which became available were placed in the hands of the most essential operators. Before a vehicle was sold to the useroperator, the opinion of the transport Licensing Authority was sought as to the degree of essentiality of the use to which it was proposed to put the vehicle. Priorities were thus established.
