SOMERVILLE HOCKEY TEAM

Leading team in the Davis Cup hockey competition, Somerville, had to fight hard on Saturday to beat the young Owai Rovers side in a game packed with thrilling incidents. The game opened sensationally, R. Baker, the Rovers' centre-forward, scoring within a minute of the opening bully. In the next minute the Somerville forwards swept downfield. and W. Spicer equalised. Somerville was often on the defence until the concluding stages, when S. Morgan scored two goals from penalty corners, and Somerville won by four goals to three.

Championship points now are:—Somerville, 12; University, 10; Mt. Eden and Port Depot, 8; St. Luke's, 7; Owai Rovers, 6; Training College, 4; Whenuapai, 3; Wesley United, 2; and Grammar Old Boys, 0.

Mt. Eden, although two players short at the start, and losing Its skipper, F. Horspool, through an injury early in the game, managed to hold Port Depot, Anally losing by 2 goals to 1. Training College accounted lor St. Luke's (5-2), and University had a win over Grammar Old Boys (3-1), although the score was not a fair Indication of the close run of play. ■ At Walker Park. Wesley United gained its first win of the season in a rugged game in the mud at the expense of Whenuapai, the score being 5 goals to 3.
