WASTE ROAD AREAS
FARMING USE SUGGESTED
LOCAL BODY DISCRETION
A contention that some use should be made of the thousands of acres of road frontages was contained io a letter read at to-day's meeting of the Auckland District Council Of Primary Production. It was suggested that county councils should permit settlers to advance fences on side roads to within a few feet of the road formation, and on main roads to as far as the telephone or power lines.
"I cannot see that this would increase production," said Mr. C. S. McCallum. He pointed out that th 6 Manukau County Council granted permission to farmers to shift fences out for periods not exceeding six months.
Mr. H. O. Mellsop contended that the money spent on shifting road fences would be better expended in improving farms.
Members agreed that local bodies had power to permit the shifting of fences, and no action was taken.
