SHIRTS AND PYJAMAS
INCREASE IN SUPPLY SOON
An increase in the supply of shirts and pyjamas is expected in the next few months, according to a statement by the president of the National Garment Control Council, Mr. S. H. Hunter. The fall in production already suffered was gradually being overcome and the position to-day was definitely better than it was three months ago, he said in a statement released in Wellington. Mr. Hunter added that periodic checks were made of factory production and where there was an oversupply of any item of clothing, that section of industry would be- used to remedy deficiences in other sections. A survey made by the National Garment Control Council had revealed that a reasonable supply of basic items of clothing, at prices ruling in 1942, was reaching the public.
The garment industry,'despite the shortage of labour and the priority of military demands, was making a determined effort to ensure that the public should be constantly supplied with adequate supplies of garments. Nevertheless, . although garments were coming on to the market in increasing quantities, there were still serious shortages and it would be some time before retailers could build up reasonable stocks.
