POST IN CANADA

HON. DAVID WILSON

NEW HIGH COMMISSIONER

(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.)

WELLINGTON, this day.

The appointment of the Hon. David Wilson, M.L.C., as High Commissioner for New Zealand in Canada, was announced by the Prime Minister, Mr. Fraser, in the House of Representatives this afternoon.

"I wish to announce that the Government has appointed the Hon. D. Wilson, at present Leader of the Legislative Council and Minister in charge of Broadcasting, as New Zealand High Commissioner in Canada," said Mr. Fraser. "Mr. Mackenzie King, Prime Minister of Canada, has advised that the Canadian Government cordially welcomes the proposal, and it has been arranged that Mr. Wilson will take up his new duties at an early date."

"I foel certain that Mr. Wilson's knowledge of our New Zealand conditions and problems, his devotion to duty and his high personal qualities will ensure his gaining the same confidence and respect from the Government and people of Canada as he has earned from the people o:E his own country."

Although no official announcement can be made at this juncture, Parliamentary circles are discussing certain other appointments. These relate to diplomatic posts in Moscow, Washington and Canberra. It is stated that the New Zealand Minister to Washington, Mr. Nash, is to return to New Zealand and will be succeeded by Mr. C. A. Berenclsen, C.M.G., who is at present High Commissioner for New Zealand at Canberra. It is stated that Mr. Berendsen's post will be taken by Mr. J. G. Barclay, former Minister of Marketing and Agriculture, who was defeated at the last elections. It is further stated that Mr. C. W. Boswell, former Labour member for the Bay of Islands, who was also defeated in the last genei'al election, i has been selected as New Zealand's representative at Moscow.

In the case of diplomatic appointments, acceptance by the countries concerned must be obtained, and in some instances His Majesty's approval must be given. Therefore, there can be no official Government announcement until the constitutional procedure has been fulfilled.

The Hon. B. Martin, M.L.C., of Auckland, is spoken of as Mr. Wilson's successor as Leader of the Legislative Council. Mr. Martin is at present chairman of committees in the council.
