AMAZING BETTING
DESriTE TRAVEL BARRIERS featu re of race meetings in at tlle w eek-end was the amount of money invested at the three fixtures, Wellington, Hamilton and Gore, in the lace of drastic restrictions on road and railway travel. The total was £209,039 10/, truly phenomenal figures in the circumstances.
Twelve months ago, quite a number of special race trains were run between Wellington and Trentham, which is approximately 18 miles away from the city, and, in addition, passenger train services throughout the island were normal, with no ban on travel over 50 miles. On this occasion all excursion trains were banned, normal services greatly curtailed, and travel over 50 miles prohibited, except by permit. Furthermore, taxis were not allowed to undertake race work.
But, in spite of all those restrictions, the betting turnover at Trentham was £140,200 10/, only £10,981 10/ below the investments for the previous autumn meeting.
At the South Auckland trots at Claudelands, Blomfield and Coy's stall' handled £39,213 10/, compared with £4-1,765 10/ last year, when the iixture was held at Te Rapa, while at Gore betting reached £29,025 10/, actually an increase of £1233 on the previous total.
