TOWN MILK SUPPLY
DISQUIETING OUTLOOK
TEST MAY CAUSE SHORTAGE The possibility of there being a shortage of milk for town supply and the serious consequences of this to the consumers of Auckland, was pointed out by Mr. C. S. McCallum, at a meeting of the Auckland District Council of Primary Production this morning, when he referred to a statement by Mr. C. R. Petrie, M.P., on the Milk Commission's report.
He stated that it would be practically impossible for the average dairy farmer to fulfil the conditions of a 4.3 test, and this standard would prove discouraging to farmers, even to those with Jersey herds.
The chairman. Mr. R. C. Clark, .stated that in view of the fact that they had only seen a brief summary of the Milk Commission's report they should reserve their main remarks until the full report came forward.
At the same time, he said, they could forward a resolution to the Government emphasising that the 4.3 test would be most discouraging to the suppliers of Auckland and would be likely to cause a decline in the supply. Last year the milk sold to the average consumer in Auckland was close tc a 4.3 test. However, he doubted whether this would be the final figure for Auckland.
It was decided to take no action in the meantime, and to defer further discussion until next meeting.
