BERLINERS LEAVE CITY IN THOUSANDS
MASS EVACUATION
American Losses Rapidly
Replaced
N.Z. Press Association—Copyright Rec. 11.30 a.m. LONDON, Mar. 10. Berliners are fleeing their shattered city in thousands after the second great American daylight raid.
Reports reaching Stockholm say a big new mass evacuation began well before the last American bomber reached its home base yesterday. Air travellers reaching Malmo (Sweden) from Germany said more Government staffs were leaving Berlin for southern and south-eastern Germany to join the Government officials evacuated six weeks ago.
One report states no Nazi party leaders were seen in Berlin this week. "Nazi leaders were conspicuous by their absence while Berlin was pounded," it said. The Evening Standard correspondent with the United States forces says by noon to-day all aircraft and air crews lost by the Americans in their three major attacks against Berlin this week had been replaced, and every American Air Force station was at full strength ready for another raid in great strength. This meant a movement of 113 bombers and 28 fighters from replacement depots, and the transfer of over a thousand men.
