FOOD MISSION'S VISIT

SUPPLIES FOR GREAT BRITAIN (P.A.) WELLINGTON, this day. The leader of the United Kingdom food mission to Australia and New Zealand, Mr. W. Bankes Amery, has arrived in Wellington for his second visit since the food mission was appointed a year ago. He is discussing with Ministers and officials questions relating to the maintenance of food supplies in the United Kingdom during the. fifth year of food rationing.

Interviewed, Mr. Amery said that, owing to reduced imports from most countries, rations could not be met during 1944 unless more supplies became available. There was no shortage of ships for essential foods, apart from temporary local shipping difficulties which sometimes occurred during peak loading. The shortage in Britain, therefore, was entirely due to the difficulties of primary production in all parts of the world. The tale was always the same—shortage of manpower, fertilisers and machinery, and sometimes adverse seasons. But wars were won by countries which best overcame difficulties on all fronts, including the farming front.

Mr. Amery hopes to visit producing centres in the Dominion. It is understood he.will arrive in Auckland on Tuesday.
