MANPOWER RAID
PICTURE THEATRES
ACTIVITY OF OFFICIALS
A raid on all Queen Street picture theatres was conducted yesterday under the authority of the National Service Department. Most of the theatres were visited in the half hour before the commencement of the afternoon programme by a male and a female officer from the Department and a constable and a policewoman. Iso figures were available this morning, but the number of people interviewed has been estimated at about 300.
The authorities were still analysing the results of the raid this morning and had no statement to make. It is understood that a number of absentees from essential industries were revealed as seeking an afternoon's entertainment and that several of those eligible to register for employment had failed to do so. Purchasers of tickets who appeared to be within the jurisdiction of the manpower officer were asked for particulars about themselves, and those who were eligible for work were instructed to report to the Manpower Department. Raids on three city theatres were made on Wednesday, the results being regarded as satisfactory by the Department. Further raids are expected, although no indication will, of course, be given as to when and where these will take place.
