FOOD OR SPORT?
MAINTAINING MORALE
APPEAL FOR ASSISTANT
The relative values of food and fishing and other sporting pursuits to the troops were discussed at. a sitting of the Auckland Industrial Manpower Committee this morning. An appeal was lodged by W. H. Tisdall, Limited, against the direction of a shop assistant, Miss M. M. Scarry, to work with the Department of Agriculture. Mr. W. A. Leggett, representing the manpower officer, said the position in regard to labour at the vegetable garden scheme conducted at Pukekohe by the Department of Agriculture, was still serious. The vegetables at the Government gardens were required solely for the purpose of supplying overseas forces, particularly those in the South-weet Pacific area. A further development was the provision of a dehydration plant at Pukekohe' as a result of which vegetables now being grown would go to combat'areas all over the world.
Evidence that the appellant firm catered to a large extent for the different branches of the armed forces, particularly in regard to fishing tackle, was given by Mr. W. H. Tisdall. Large quantities of tackle were sent to the Islands, he said. Fishing ranked high in helping to maintain morale and keep the armed forces in good condition. Mr. Leggett: Is it as high as food? Witness: I don't know that I can say that, but it is very high. The appeal was dismissed, the appellant firm being allowed to retain the employee for a month.
