POWERFUL ATTACK
Russians Reported To Have
Assumed Offensive
N.Z. Press Association—Copyright Rec. 12.30 p.m. LONDON, Mar. 8. An unconfirmed Stockholm report says that the Russians have launched a 'powerful attack against Finland. The Red Army's aim appears to be to drive across the waist of Finland to the Gulf of Bothnia, severing 100.000 German troops in the north from their headquarters in the south.
The Evening Standard says General Dietl is regrouping the German troops around Petsamo. He will make a desperate attempt to hold north Finland, but if this fails he will fall back into Norway.
It was reported from Helsinki, earlier, that the Finnish High Command announced that 20 Russian dive-bombers attacked Ivotka, on the Gulf of Finland, east of Helsinki, on Monday, causing the loss of life and propertv. This is the first Russian air attack on a Finnish town since the Soviet Government published the armistice terms on February 29.
