AIRWAYS CHIEFS
BRITISHERS ARRIVE
LORD KNOLLYS' VISIT
Lord Knollys, chairman of the British Overseas Airways Corporation, and Mr. Campbell Orde, director of operations, of the same organisation, arrived by air from Australia this afternoon.
They have come to New Zealand to confer with local authorities on post-war aviation.
Lord Knollys said in Australia that post-war aviation should not be Government-owned. It should be possible to organise a scheme by which Governments could take an interest in post-war airways and still retain the best features of private enterprise.
During his stay in Australia, Lord Knollys discussed post-war flying plans with Mr. Hudson Fysh, managing director of Qantas and other aviation authorities.
It is the opinion of Lord Knollys that Australia must decide for herself how she will fit into the postwar aviation world. In this decision New Zealand will be vitally affected. He believes that Australia will make her own plans about the air routes in which she is interested, and whatever plans Australia makes will be fitted in the general plan.
British Overseas Airways Corporation would have various routes allotted to it but would not have routes to the Pacific.
It was, he said, generally agreed that the enemy would not be allowed to have air transport after the war. People were determined about- that. They would take no risks this time. The need of an amicable international agreement on postwar airways was obvious.
There would probably be two types of services between England and Australia —one designed for those who wanted to travel in a hurry, and the other for those who wanted a more leisurely journey.
Prior to visiting Australia Lord Knollys went to India on a similar mission. In New Zealand one of the authorities with whom he will discuss post-war problems is Brigadier N. S. Falla, C.M.G.. managing director of Tasman Airways.
Lord Knollys was welcomed by Brigadier Falla and Mr. T. Barrow, Air Secretary.
