VETERAN TRAINER DIES
FORMER NEW ZEALAXDER Rec. 9 a.m. MELBOURNE, this day. The death is announced of D. J. Price, one of Australia's best known racehorse trainers until his retirement several rears ago. He was born in New Zealand in IS6B. Price had outstanding success cm trotting tracks in the Dominion beioie he settled in Victoria, and turned nis attention to gallopers.
D. J. Price came from a widely-known fa™ l '? of horsemen in the South Island, and amons his noted successes on trotting tracts in jnc Dominion was the New Zealand Cup m 1905 witn Birchmark. After settling in Victoria he vistteo New Zealand with the champion pacer Ribbonwood, to defeat Fritz in a series of match races in 1911. He was one of the most -redoubtable trainers of gallopers in Victoria during the fir« two decades of this century, and won mnumeraoie important races, including the Australian Steeplechase in 1907 with his own horse, the lamoiis Briberv, which also won the V.R.C. Grand NationaJ Hurdle Race in the same year. and. in 1909. took the V.R.C. Grand National Steeplechase under 12.11. .
