BOY'S LIFE SAVED
WAS AT POOL'S BOTTOM
AMBULAXCE MAX'S ACTION
(0.C.)
HAMILTON, this day
The ready action of Mr. J. Barr. of Pukemiro. was instrumental in saving the life of a boy who fell into the swimming pool at Pukemiro. The boy, J. Hirst, aged seven years, of Glen Afton, was unabJe to swim. He was watching other children playing around the pool when he slipped and fell into the water at the end reserved for swimmers, his body remaining at the bottom of the pool. Children present called for help, but the few adults in the vicinity were unable to swim and could not go to the rescue. Hearing calls for help, Mr. Barr. who is a member of the Pukemiro St. John Ambulance Association, hurried from his home a few hundred yards away and immediately dived for the boy.
As the bottom of the pool was full of mud, it was a few minutes before he could find the lad and bring him to the surface. He was unconscious, and Mr. Barr applied artificial respiration until the boy showed signs of life. Additional treatment was given by Dr. R. Monk, and Mr. Barr then brought the boy to the Waikato Hospital, where he is recovering.
