COUPON-FREE MINCE
THE POSITION EXPLAINED
Some confusion existed in the minds of many people to-day as to whether mince was coupon, free or not, probably because in his original broadcast the Minister of Supply, Mr. Sullivan, said that if beef or veal were minced coupons would be required. He did not refer, however, to mincemeat, which is not rationed.
This information is made clear in the Trade Bulletin No. 1 on meat rationing, which was issued by the Food Controller on February 23 and constitutes the official instructions. It states that no coupons are required for mincemeat.
A manager of a butcher's firm said this morning that obviously coupons would be required for steak or gravy beef which was minced in the shop, but the ordinary mincemeat which was sold already minced was not rationed, as it was made from trimmings. In the past gravy beef was sometimes used for mince, if there was a bigger demand for it that way, but now, of course, all beef was rationed. Shin meat and skirtings were also used formerly, but these were now set aside for animals, and it might not be possible to mince them.
