A plan to provide a free national optometrical service has been placed before the Federal Parliamentary Committee which is inquirng into social security schemes by the vicepresident of the Australasian Optemetrical Association, Mr. W. G. Kett.
Mr. Kett said some optometrists would be prepared to become salary earners in the Government's employ if the plan were adopted. The estimated cost of the plan is £875,000 a year, with a capital outlay of £665,000.
The plan includes establishments of uniform four-year optemetrical courses at Australian Universities.
The head of a Sydney firm of optometrists said he had 3000 orders for glasses which could not be fulfilled.
"Before the war it was possible to supply glasses in two days," he said. "Now customers are compelled to wait up to three months."
