DESTROYING MOTH PEST

SUCCESS OF PARASITE

(P.A.) PALMERSTON N., this day

A. survey of the Manawatii, Rangtttkei, and Hawke's Bay districts by Mr. J. Muggeridge, entomologist of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research, stationed at Nelson, reveals the successful control of the diamondbacked moth as a result of parasite liberations in recent years. This moth in the last 60 or 70 years has levied a heavy toll of turnips, swedes, rape and ehou moellier, conservatively estimated in value at £250,000. This control probably represents the greatest economic gain achieved in New Zealand by biological control of insect pests.

A similar survey will be made in the south Island.
