TROOPSHIP SUNK IN EUROPEAN WATERS

WOO AMERICANS LOST

Biggest Disaster Of Kind

In This War

N.Z. Press Association—Copyright Rec. 1 p.m. WASHINGTON, Feb. 17. The sinking of an Allied troopship in European waters, with the loss of 1000 American soldiers, is announced by the War Department. This announcement adds that approximately 1000 other American soldiers were rescued. Substantial numbers of Americans were aboard the ship, which was lost at night. The date is not disclosed because the enemy presumably does not know the results of the attack. The ship sank rapidly in a heavy sea. The United Press says that it was the greatest disaster of the kind in this war. Not a single American soldier was lost in the last war in a transport sinking.
