NIGHT CLUB CASE
S.M. GIVES JUDGMENT
CONVICTIONS ENTERED Convictions were entered on two counts, and the third one was dismissed, under a lengthy written judgment delivered by Mr. J. H. Luxford, S.M., in the Police Court to-day in the case in which Edward Grondin (Mr. Henry), manager of the National Club in Swanson Street, was charged (1) with conducting a public entertainment without the consent of the Auckland City Council (2) with opening the National Club for the purpose of transacting business and (3) using the National Club for dancing without it being licensed by the City Council. In reviewing the evidence Mr. Luxford pointed out that the National Club was a proprietary club catering for servicemen, merchant seamen and their female friends The place had not been licensed as a dance hall, and no consent had been given for the. premises to be opened on a Sunday. Accused was fined £5 and costs on the first charge, and on the second was ordered to pay costs only.
