AUSTRALIAN DEVELOPMENT
Rec. 1 p.m. CANBERRA, this day
Far-reaching plans for the development of Australian civil aviation will follow the appointment of Mr. D. McVev as Dircctor-General of Civil Aviation. Mr. McVey, who is Direc-tor-General of Posts and Telegraphs, is regarded as one of Australia's outstanding public servants. In his new post he succeeds Mr. A. B. Corbett, who will retire soon. Mr. McVey will go abroad shortly. After his trip to America and Britain last year the Commonwealth Government decided to build fourengined bombers in Australia. The plans used for these machines will be suitable for the production of civil planes after the war. A number of Sunderland flying boats are being flown to Australia for the R.A.A.F. This has been announced by the Minister for Air, Mr. Drakeford, who also revealed that American Martin Mariner fourengined flying boats had been added to the strength of the R.A.A.F.
