PLEA NOT VALID
PARENTS' HARDSHIP
EXEMPTION FROM SCHOOL
There is no provision for exemption from attendance at school of children up to the age of 15 on the grounds of economic hardship. This point is made clear in the Education (School Age) Regulations, 1943, concerning the raising of the school leaving age. A'memorandum on the subject was received by the Auckland Education Board to-day. This means that a parent's plea of economic hardship as grounds for keeping a child from secondary school would not be valid. The regulations add that pupils who have completed the work of Form 11. should enrol in the most convenient intermediate or postprimary school. Those who cannot attend such a school should enrol as Form 111. pupils in the nearest public .school. It is considered that all certificated teachers should, be capable of giving a satisfactory course in Form 111. Where assistance is necessary, for instance, in dressmaking, the Correspondence School is available. This is also available for pupils who cannot attend any school for the Form 111. course.
