"FIGHTING FOR POWER"
THREATS TO CEASE WORK
The following statement has been issued by the Port of Auckland Shipping and Stevedores' Association: — "This is not a question of the safety of a snip's gangway, but solely one of the union executive fighting for the power to run the waterfront as they think fit, and therefore lighting the Government of the country, which is represented in this case by the Waterfront Control Commission. Time and again there are threats of ceasing work if this or that dispute is not decided as the union thinks fit, but the time must come when to placate must cease and the recognised methods of settlement become a fact and not a farce. "Employers may not always agree with everything the commission happens to think is best for the dispatch of ships, but once the Government had decreed that this body was necessary the employers have done their utmost to assist toward the objects in view, and can see no reason why the Auckland branch of the Waterside Workers' Union should not do likewise."
