FALL OF SINGAPORE

SECOND ANNIVERSARY TODAY Two years ago to-day the fall of Singapore, described as the greatest surrender in British history, took place. Some 60,000 troops, including 13,000 Australians, and thousands of civilians who had not escaped by sea, were taken captive. Four days after the fall of Singapore the Japanese bombed Darwin, and the invasion of New Guinea began on March 8. 1942. The Australian mainland was subjected to several other raids by air, and enemy ships steamed far south' in the Pacific, threatening Australia and New Zealand.
