KILLED IN ACTION

WELL-KNOWN ATHLETE Major lan M. Thomson, reported killed in action, the only son of Mrs. M. A. Thomson, of 10, Paice Avenue. Dominion Road, left New Zealand for the Middle East with the sixth reinforcements. He enlisted, as a private, and was in camp before-the First Echelon was mobilised. After

training for a commission he served with a Pacific garrison force. With an Auckland infantry battalion, he was severely wounded at Ruiweisat, in July, 1942, and for some months was out of the line before joining another northern battalion with which he served throughout the Tunisian campaign. Major Thomson was one of the most popular officers in the N.Z.E.F. Educated at the Mount Albeit Grammar School, he took up accountancy, and before enlisting was employed at Taumarunui. He was a wellperformed amateur athlete, and was a familiar figure at various meetings throughout the province.
