CAUTION URGED
EXPLOSION MENACE ADVICE TO CONSUMERS The menace of gas explosions was mentioned by Mr. R. Worley, manager of the Auckland Gas Company, to-day. He said that owing to the pipes having been empty of gas there might be danger when the supply was resumed, unless certain instructions were obeyed. "If people do not carry them out there is a grave likelihood of explosions," he said. The position will be thoroughly safe-if the following precautions are observed:— Turn off all meter taps immediately. Turn off all burner taps and particularly the taps on all automatic applicances. pilot taps. etc. Do not turn the meter tap on until advised by the company, either in the Press or over the air. After the meter tap is turned on consumers may turn on the stove and ordinary appliance taps. Do not turn on appliances such as water heaters which operate by pilot lights, as the supply of gas in the mains will not be sufficiently reliable to maintain the pilots for some time. The company will advise consumers when this may be done. Industrial and commercial users are strongly advised, after they have heard that the supply is available, to contact the maintenance department of the Gas Company, who will send a member of the staff to start up their appliances. Consumers arc advised that it is more than likely that during the. enforced rest, air will have infiltrated into the service pipes between the appliance and the meter. This air has to come out. again before the burners will light up. Make sure that when lighted the burners stay alight, and don't leave them unattended until the consumer is satisfied that all is in order.
