COMING SHORTAGE

AUSTRALIAN FOOD PROBLEM SYDNEY, Dec. 21. "Australia will go short of some food commodities," said the Prime Minister, Mr. Curtin, to-day. He claimed that in spite of manpower and transport difliculties, the Commonwealth's production of meat, eggs, vegetables and fruit was higher than before the war. However, next year's demands for eggs and fresh milk would be in excess of the supplies available. Many critics believe that the coming year will inherit the cumulative effects of the difficulties caused by the war on the Australian food front. It is stated this week that in Northern Queensland residents have been forced to line up for the necessities of life "like the inhabitants of German-occupied countries." Attention is being drawn to the contrasting food position in Australia and New Zealand. A party of sheep-breeders from New South Wales' who visited New Zealand recentlv to buy stud sheep were amazed by the "lavish hotel menus and the complete absence of food queues in New Zealand towns."
