HOSPITALS' PLIGHT
VERY DIFFICULT POSITION The position in regard to Auckland public and private hospitals i? a difficult one. At the moment the total of patients in the Auckland, Green Lane and Ellerslie Hospitals is approximately ISOO and there is a living-in staff of several hundreds. "We expect to get through to-day all right," said the chairman of the Auckland Hospital Board, Mr. Allan J. Moody. Officials at the Auckland Hospital pointed out that gas was used- largely for cooking, and although there were ample supplies of steam, the position in carrying would be very difficult. Formerly almost entirely dependent on three large gas stoves, the staff of one of Auckland's largest private hospitals now has only one small electric oven to fall back on. Vegetables are prepared for the most part by steaming, but this involves considerable extra work for 'the staff, which to-day was having a very trying time. It was reported from another large private hospital that they were entirely dependent on gas.
