CLOSE GAME AT DEVONPORT

YMP A S ' Pai " nell and Grafton™'A; are e , riual in the lead with four com™?fr COmp ' eled in the Afc.A. senior I " n The Present P osl tion of the wn en ParneU and Grafton 16 points, 01 th Shore and Eden-Ponsonby-Balmoral Tjnivei sity-Middiemore S, Parneli Colts Interest was maintained in all three ma c les on Saturday. Grafton was unable to secure an innings victory over University-Middlemore in the main game, but Eden defeated the Colts outright on the next wicket at Eden Park. r ,£ Devonport, North Shore narrowly ''f sain a similar win over Parnen, na\ ing to be content with four points. University Makes Stand J'foWmg a very strong position in the match against University-Middlemore, with U\o wickets down for 120 in reply to its opponents 118, Grafton-Y.M.C.A. set out i,? 'J?, 1 '? 6 the pace when play was resumed. Ellis, who was unbeaten with 56, failed to add to his score, but aggressive batting by N. Martin and G. Wallace saw the score mount rapidly. Martin, who compiled the highest total of the day, 64, gave his best display this season and drove strongly. Always looking for runs, \\ allace made some nice all-round shots for his 41. Grafton declared for 24D for S'x wickets, leaving University-Middlemore 1.i2 to make to avoid an innings defeac. C. Burke and R. G. Emery trundled well m the early stages and had sent the first five University batsmen to the pavilion when the total read 74. This ended Grafton's hopes, however, as L. M. Smith and W. Sidnam held up the attack until stumps. The former showed improved form in compiling 45 not out, while his partner's batting was more in keeping with his form last season. Sidnam was undefeated for 32. Burke, three for 52, headed the Grafton attack. His bowling, however, was not so consistent in direction as usual, and he sent down many deliveries well out on the off. W. SI. Wallace To Fore Fortunes fluctuated considerably in the match between Eden and the Colts. The latter side, attempting to overhaul Eden's total of 145. had already lost nine wickets, and the innings closed in the seventh over of the day for 130. Eden replied with 140, H. B. Jones making 41 in good style, this leaving the Colts with 156 to get in their second knock to win outright. W. M. Wallace bowled cleverly to secure five Eden wickets for 60. Much depended upon Wallace if the Colts were to gain their first win of the season, and when he became associated with .T. Burton in a second wicket partnership Eden's chances faded. However, after latter had been bowled by Harrison for. an attractive 24, Wallace was caught on the boundary for 41' with the score at 89. This was the end of the Colts' hopes, and the remaining four wickets added only 13 runs, Lawrence being absent. Exciting Finish One of the most exciting finishes at Devonport for some time was seen when Capstick. for Parneli, made a very sporting declaration in the second innings, leaving North Shore 104 runs to get for an outright victory in 80 minutes. When stumps were drawn the home side was only three runs short with five wickets in hand. In Parnell's second knock Fenton was top scorer with 34. He hit hard and often and included four boundaries and six 2's in his tally. Capstick (30.'not out) plaved a 'fine innings. Sutcliffe.. (28), although lucky on a couple of occasions, was brilliant at times, while McDonald (23), McLean (18) and Davidson (lo) batted well. Prentice, three wickets for 33, and C. Jessup, three for 45, were the most effective Shore bowlers, while Matthews and Parish each took a wicket for the cost of 14 and 35 respectively. Edmonds (14) anu Pearson (29) again gave Shore a good start, and 48 was on the board in good time before the partnership was broken. Green, who hit hard for 12. including one beautiful sjx which dropped on the full into Domam Street, and Cowie, 11 not out, did their best to force a win in the closing stages but could not top Parnell's score.
