MUNICIPAL HOUSES
OLD WELLINGTON SCHEME (0.C.) WELLINGTON, this day. With the Wellington City Council proposing to build houses and flats next it is interesting to recall what happened to a similar venture by the corporation nearly 25 years ago. Then the corporation raised £25,000 from the Government at 44per cent interest, and with it built 22 dwellings on what was then known as the Creswick Estate at Northland. These houses were built to sell, not to rent, so the experiment was eagerly watched by all concerned with municipal housing. The corporation came out on the right side of the ledger. The houses built on the day labour principle under the direction of the late Mr Robert McKenzie, were all sold on terms suited to the occupiers, and, with the exception of two, they were bought and paid for. Two reverted to the council and were let.
