For more than eight hours Mr. Lajos Steiner walked round and round the floor of the Maccabean Hall and played approximately 4000 chess moves. He played 105 opponents, won 85 games and lost seven. Thirteen games were drawn.
First of Steiner's opponents to draw was a boy of eight, J. H. S. Lee, of Auburn.
Steiner, a Hungarian, studied engineering, passed his exams and then devoted his whole time to sports, including chess and wrestling. Settling in Australia in 1939, he married Miss Edna Kingston, New South Wales women's chess champion.
The record number of simultaneous chess games for Australasia is 143 boards. It is held by Lieutenant G. Koshnitsky.
