WIDOWS' PENSIONS
I would like to draw attention to the hard lot of aged widows and widowers. Though it is possible for an old couple to manage on their joint pension, it is quite another matter to try and exist alone on 32/6 per week. Gas, light, a pot of tea, accommodation, etc.. costs no more for two than one. When we consider the pensions allowed burnt-out soldiers, war widows and disabled soldiers, it appears to me that something should be done at once for these old people who often have to pay as much as 12/6 for a room, gas and light extra. I don't think for a moment that the other classes of pensions are overpaid; I merely wish to show how impossible it is to do everything on 32/6 per week. BLOCKHOUSE.
