MARRIAGE FAILURES
Australian Wives Of American Soldiers WOMAN SENATOR'S ACTION Rec. 9.30 a.m. SYDNEY, this day. "I have been amazed by the number of Australian-American marriages that have floundered," said Senator Dorothy Tangney. She added that because of the law of domicile, Australian girls who had been deserted by their American soldier husbands were unable to obtain either divorce or maintenance orders. Senator Tangney is seeking the gazetting of a national security regulation to overcome the difficulty. Under the present law of domicile these girls, some of whom had babies and were without maintenance of any sort from their husbands, she stated, could obtain redress of divorce only if they go to America or could afford to pay the fees of an American solicitor to act in the United States on their behalf. '"Host of these unhappy marriages," she concluded, "were contracted before June, 1942, when the American regulations governing the marriage abroad of United States Service personnel were tightened up."
