MARRIED AT FOURTEEN
YOUNG WOMAN'S BIGAMY Marriage under maternal pressure at the age of 14 to a man 34 years her senior, and a natural drift apart till they separated, was urged by Mr. Aekins in a plea for clemency toAvards a young woman, now aged 22, who had admitted the offence of bigamy this year with a soldier on furlough from the Middle East, and yesterday came before Mr. Justice Callan for sentence. Counsel said his client had regarded her marriage at an end, and she had a deep affection for the man with whom she went through the form of marriage. Actually her husband proposed getting a divorce, and the other man desired to pay the costs and to marry the young woman. Commenting that the circumstances were exceptional, his Honor admitted the woman to probation for two years, and made an order suppressing publication of her name.
