WIVES OF POLICEMEN MAXFOWKK RULING "The excuse that the Police Regulations will not allow her to work has no bearing on the matter," said the chairman of the Auckland Industrial Manpower Committee, Mr. J. O. Liddell, yesterday afternoon when an appeal by Miss L. D. Connell (Mr. Tong) was being heard. Miss Connell sought her release from the Post and Telegraph Department, and the staff superintendent at the Auckland Chief Post Office, Mr. S. Smith, said that it was intended to replace her with another female employee who had been transferred from the Russell office. The latter, however, had married an Auckland constable, who advised the post office that his wife could not continue her duties, as the Police Regulations prevented a policeman's wife from working. All women between 18 years and 30 years, including those who were married and without children, came within the scope of the Manpower Emergency Regulations, said Mr. Liddell. If there was any obstruction by the police authorities, the matter would have to be brought before the manpower officer. The appeal was allowed, on condition that Miss Connell remained in her present position for not longer than a month.
