GIRLS ON THE LAND

(P.A.) INVERCARGILL, Friday. A decision to suggest to the Government that the women's land service was not a solution of farm labour problems was reached at a meeting of the Invercargill district council of primary production today. The opinion was expressed that it seemed regrettable that such an intensive campaign was being conducted to get girls to go on to farms when farmers did not know where to get teamsters or tractor drivers. Mr. R. Sim said there was a lot of work on the farm that no girl could do. A strong man was required for some jobs. They should give credit, however, to the women for the work thev were doing. The chairman/Mr. G. Stevenson, said that, land girls could be of great assistance on dairy farms. He knew of one man who employed three land girls and they were engaged on such work as laying out tiles, driving tractors and attending sheep. One acted as cook for the other two, and at intervals did work on the property.
