PARSHALL
A GREAT WIN
TROTTING AT EPSOM
The Auckland favourite, Parshall, which disappointed his supporters on Saturday, made amends to-day when he recorded a brilliant performance to win the Labour Day Handicap, chief event at the Auckland Trotting Club's spring meeting. The weather was fine, the track good, and the attendance large. There was an exciting finish in the first division of the Alexandra Handicap. As the leaders turned into the home stretch Bluestock had a very slight lead on Sonny Jewel, with Stuart Lee right on their heels and looking for a run on the inside. Half way clown the running Bluestock was only a neck in front of Sonny Jewel, and Stuart Lee, in trying to get through a slight opening on the fence, broke, leaving Bluestock to win a hard contest by three-quarters of a length from Sonny Jewel. The lastnamed had led early, but with a round to go Bluestock was pacing nicely in front of Sonny Jewel and the pair were closely followed by Stuart Lee, Lucky Jane, Sumana, Great Shadow and Beau Gaillard. As they swept through the toy stretch Sonny Jewel and Stuart Lee singled themselves out, and it .was apparent the issue would be fought out by them. Stuart Lee's supporters may have been a bit unlucky, as he was going exceptionally well when he broke. Sumana was fourth, followed by Durato and Noble de Oro. i
In the second division Jewel's Eyre, which had run into a place on the first day, showed exceptional improvement by his outing, for he really played with the field this afternoon. M. Paul had him in front early on the rails and he slowly the field down, having Carnival Queen on the outside level with him most of the final round, and Gay Spark, Pinocchio and Manonee close up. Once they turned for home Paul shot Jewel's Eyre away to win as he liked from' Pinocchio. Everest was third, a neck in front of Carnival Queen, and then came Kaftake Boy and Lady Moness. Millie Winkie Scores An outsider Willie Winkie trotted a solid race to win the Greenlane Handicap, thus giving the veteran driver W. Head his first win here for a very long time. It was no easy victory, as Willie Winkie had to be driven out to beat an even greater outsider Audrey's Last, which incidentally was driven by Head's long- I time friend G. A. Williams. Early in the | raca Millie Wrack opened up a big lead; i in fact, she was out 14 or 15 lengths at -the end of half a mile, but with a round J to go she only had a couple of lengths on Willie Winkie, and they were hotly pursued by Parwrack, Win Thru and
Forewarned. At the half-mile pole Forewarned broke badly and Willie Winkie dashed past Millie Wrack to lead into the top from Audrey's last, which had gone up fast also, to head Millie Wrack, while Barney Bingen and Paiahua made progress to be In winning positions. Willie Winkie turned for home first and he had enough in reserve to defeat the fastfinishing Audrey's Last by a neck, Millie Wrack struggling on into third place, clear of Paiahua and Forewarned. Flying Scott broke up at the start and effectually settled the hopes of a big army of supporters. Another Good Price When the "go" was given in the Insulation Handicap the hot favourite, Sir Victor, lost a lot of ground, while the solidly backed Toushay was involved in a collision, capsized the sulky and precipitating Berkett out on to the track. Sir Victor later showed a lot of speed, but never really nattered his supporters as he had too much ground to make up and furthermore had to cover extra ground. His was a good performance in the circumstances to get third. Syncopate, which was bracketed with Brass Buttons, and a pleasing performer on Saturdav, appreciated the drier conditions and he went very fast at the two furlongs pole to have the race won before the home stretch was entered. He was on a tight rein at the finish and returned his supporters a good double-figure dividend. Volterra, a South Island representative, made the pace for a half-mile from Sandiways, Certify, Syncopate and Cam Derby, but Sandiways led past the stand as they entered the final round with Certify, Cam Derby and Volterra within a length of him, and then Syncopate, Brass Buttons and Sir Victor. There was little between Sandiways, Certify and Larissa as they swung into the top. but Syncopate quickly put paid to their account, and it
■was left to Larissa to take second place ', from Sir Victor. Volterra was a moderate fourth, followed by Brass Buttons, Gal- ■ lant Maid and Certify. A Fine Performance Revealing all that dash which might take him to victory in the New Zealand . Trotting Cup, Parshall "finished brilliantly to take the Labour Day Handicap from - the favourite, Sabu, just when it appeared as though the latter had everything signed, sealed and delivered. Parshall was ■giving Sabu two lengths start inside the furlong pole, and he responded magnificently to every call by F. J. Smith to have the race won lo yards from the post. Club King set a fast pace early from Philario and Te Roto, but Sabu and Hillcrest were close up, and at the end of half a mile Parrish Lad and Par- " shall were in close attendance. Hillcrest, a winner on the first day, went fast on the outer to lead Club King to the straight and when they were opposite the stand Philario, Te Roto, Sabu, Parrish Lad and Parshall were racing in close company just behind. Coming down the top into the ■ straight, Sabu and Parrish Lad went very fast to wrest the lead from Hillcrest, and then Sabu shot clear. Half way down the ' running Parshall flashed up, and his burst of speed at the end was altogether too good. Parrish Lad hung on gamely for * third place, with Philario, which had run . a sound race, fourth, followed by True Guide, Hillcrest and Black Label.

AT TRENTHAM KINDERGARTEN Beats Rakanui Home In Harcourt | (Special) WELLINGTON, this day. Smaller fields were engaged in the events at the concluding day of the Wellington Racing Club's spring meeting to-day. Heavy rain overnight left the track heavy. There was a large attendance. Only nine of the 15 acceptors for the Rimu Hurdles went to the post, and Colonel Rouge was installed a warm order, but the proved mudlark Moderate beat him pointlessly. Colonel Rouge and Black Musk \vent to the front from Malacca and Flying Spy, but along the back Moderate improved his position, and with Black Musk commencing to weaken crossing the top, Moderate and Colonel Rouge took over. Landed over the last fence, Moderate drew clear to win by
four lengths from the favourite, with Malacca half a head back. Black Musk held on for fourth. Flying Spy ran badly. The winner carried £1093 and £1405. Colonel Rouge £4093 and £1610, and Malacca £230 and £332. A Wretched Start The Trial Stakes was ruined by a wretched start, but probably nothing would have beaten Conspicuous, although Desert Strife received a lot the worse of the running in comparison with the favourite. Royal Greek and Denary were the smartest to begin, but Conspicuous ran up quickly and he took charge immediately on turning into the straight. Meantime, Desert Strife had been improving her position, but it was only in the last stride that she got up to beat Royal Greek for third. Latin Bay and Typhoon were next. Foxella took no part in the race. Conspicuous carried £3116 and £2295, Desert Strife £974 and £1561, and Royal Greek £59 and £188. Untroubled To Win Despite the fact that he had been under a cloud over the week-end, Kindergarten dominated the betting ir. the Harcourt Stakes. He was not asked a serious question by his rider-trainer, who merely kept him going to the sight of home, when Kindergarten drew up to the leaders. Rakanui made a bid to hold on. but the champion was untroubled to win by threequarters of a length, with Marble Fox a couple of lengths back. Kindergarten carried £ISOO and £2757 and Rakanui £220 and £2022. The former actually paid 1/ more on the place machine than for a win.
