WOMEN'S HOSPITAL
TN the last five years New Zealanders have heard much about methods r. of paying for medical seiwice, but little, too little, about the quality of the service. The quality depends, and will depend, mainly on the prdficiency of the doctor, and he (or she) cannot attain the highest degree of proficiency without adequate training and experience. It has long been recognised that in New Zealand there is a serious deficiency in v ,facilities for post-graduate training in obstetrics and gynaecology. To repair this deficiency it is proposed that there should be established a wbmen's hospital, which will also be a teaching centre. As the result of much preliminary work, of which Dr. Doris Gordon' gave a review vesterday in an address to the Rotary Club, practical agreement has been reached that the hospital should be built in Auckland. There is no doubt of the need, nor of the pre-eminent suitability of Auckland to be its site. There remains the question of how much money Aucklanders are prepared to give to ensure that the hospital will be as fully equipped for University purposes as any similar institution overseas. It is a question to which all Auckland organisations with pride in their city should give practical attention. Dr. Gordon remarked yesterday that Otago people have given to their Medical School sums totalling nearly £500,000. That is a magnificent record, which should be a challenge to Aucklanders now that the opportunity has come for them to make a substantial contribution to the medical training establishments of the Dominion.
