INDIAN V.C. WINNER
Investiture At Buckingham Palace
CEREMONY IN THE OPEN AIR British Official Wireless Rec. 12.30 p.m. RUGBY, Sept. 26. The King held an open-air investiture in the inner quadrangle of Buckingham Palace, at which he decorated Subadar (Captain) Lai Bahadur Thapa, of the Ghurka Rifles ■with the Victoria Cross. The King and Queen walked slowly down the line of Indian soldiers shaking hands and chatting with each man in turn. Then the King pinned the bronze cross on the tunic of the Ghurka hero. Afterwards the King presented the other decorations won while the Fourth Indian Division was fighting in North Africa.
Subadar Thapa won the V.C. for valour during a night attack in Southern Tunisia. He commanded a company dispatched for an operation upon which depended the penetration of our troops into the hills. He led his men through a narrow cleft in face of intense enemy fire. The party routed the enemy, after killing many of them, thus enabling the advance of their brigade.
