SMALL MARGINS

SEATS IN DOUBT

ONLY ONE WOMAN M.P.

The election was notable for close contests, 25 seats on the preliminary count giving majorities to the leading candidates of under 1000. This does not include Southern Maori, where the total vote is less than 1000. In consequence, the issue is not entirely clear In a number of cases. The seats most in doubt are Oamaru, New Plymouth, Eden, Wairarapa, Raglan and Otaki. Labour is leading in four of these, and National in two. Mr. E. P. Aderman (National) is 40 ahead of the sitting Labour member, Mr. F. L. Frost at New Plymouth. In Eden Mr. W. T. Anderton, sitting Labour member, is leading Lieutenant-Colonel W. H. Fortune by 50 votes. In Wairarapa Mr. B. Roberts, sitting Labour member, has a majority of 50 over the National candidate, Mr. J. J. Maher. Mr. R. Coulter (Labour) leads Mr. W. J. Glasgow (National) by 53 in Raglan, a seat held by the retiring Labour member, Mr. W. Lee Martin. In Otaki the sitting Labour member, Mr. L. G. Lowry, has a lead of 69 over Mr. B. V. Cooksley. Absentee, seamen's and postal votes will decide the issue in these cases. Two Women Defeated In the new House there will be only one woman member, Miss M. B. Howard (Christchurch East). In the last Parliament there were four women. Mrs. A. N. Grigg (National), who held the Mid-Canterbury seat following the death of her husband, retired after her marriage to Mr. W. J. Poison, M.P. (Stratford). Mrs. Mary Dreaver, who was the sitting Labour member for Waitemata, was defeated at Saturday's poll by Mr. H. T. Morton (National), and Mrs. Cathie Stewart (Labour, Wellington West) was defeated by Mr. C. M. Bowden (National). Making a "grudge" fight against the Prime Minister in Wellington Central, Mr. C. G. Scrimgeour (Independent), former Director of the National Commercial Broadcasting Service, polled only 2080 votes out of a total of 13,461. Mr. Fraser polled 6212 votes, and the National candidate, Mr. Will Appleton, 5079.

Mr. R. M. Algie, elected National member for Remuera, polled the highest vote in the Dominion, 10,754, out of a total preliminary count of 18,991. Dr. A. M. Finlay (Labour), his nearest opponent, polled 7199 votes. The services' vote, a feature of this election, decided a number of seats where the issue was close. In the majority of cases the services' vote assisted Government candidates ' : i
