BOWLING CHALLENGES
TRANSPORT'S DOUBLE WIN (By TRUNDLER) An unusual feature has developed in the interclub challenge matches, which always attract the chief attention during the winter. The season has already been cut short by the record late Easter involving a late start, and the number of six wet Saturdays making a further curtailment. Now two of the five scries have stopped at this early date, instead ol continuing into October owing to Auckland Transport successfully defending the Denison Pins and winning the Diggers' Badges. By a coincidence. Onchunga is holding the Edwin Stars, after 10 wins, and the Jordan Pins, after three wins., so if they happen to win again next Saturday it. will also be the last of these two competitions. Incidentally, it may not be out of place to suggest that* , these matches would familiar with the rules, particularly No. 2 and The Diggers , Badges provided a. remarkably keen game at Devonport, with such attractive features that the club members preferred to watch the play rather than make up their own games. The lead changed about a dozen times until they again tied at 16-all on the 20th end' Transport held the shot, which Mason tried to remove with his last bowl, but he struck an opposing bowl, to give Jeffrey a win by two' a. Zenovich, p. Laffola. S. Roper, E. G Jcffrev (Transport), challengers. 18, v. A. Dumper d" Tainsh, B. Worthington, T. Mason (Devonport) \ 16.
A close game was expected at the Transport green, where the defenders of the Denison Pins included three of the four who are to compete at Dunedin in January, while the challengers included two of the biggest winners at Stanley. However, Transport had it all their own way, securing five on the first end, and reaching 19 to 2 at the tenth. Thereafter there was nothing to do but play carefully, with saving shots, the final score being: E. B. Foster. H. H. Neal W Horscroft. J. C. Taplin (Transport) 24 v A Hitchen, Jun., J. Porter. W. G. Gale, A. Hitcheri (Stanley), challengers, 21.
There was another'fine 'ontest for the Edwin Stars, as might be expected when the teams included such- accurate and willing- drivers as Alex Moon and Alex Robertson. Moon's most successful drive was on the 19th, when he reduced his deficit, to five, but he could not improve it, the game ending: T. A. George, A. R. Gatland H. A. Robertson, F. Livingstone (Onehunga) 21, v. H. C. Keegan, w. Allcock, H. Mitchell A. L. Moon (Te Papapa), challengers. 16. The next challengers are P. Dyson (Hallyburton Johnstone) T. A. McClymont (Ponsonby) and A. H. Stitchbury (West End).
Onehunga again had its team ot Diggers to defend the Jordan Pins. They were far too good lor the visitors, and it was bad luck that the smaller club happened to be playing two games on the same day, occasioned by another club being unable to take their turn. However, their low score did not indicate poor play, but rather the strong combination which they had to meet, the card reading: H. E. Reaks, L. Jones, R. Cross, S. Vella (Onehunga), 31, v". C. Kruse, R. A. Culley, R. Thomas, S. J. Moore (Te Papapa). challengers, 7.
